The University of California, Los Angeles Institute of the Environment and Sustainability has conducted an innovative project to analyse the biogeography of urban forests, which is the first examination of its kind to analyse the conditions and ecology of vegetation in cities. Conducting research which is forming a discipline as it produces results is far from easy, but a team at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability have been conducting a study which explores the nascent discipline of urban biogeography. Their investigation has managed to achieve a number of important results, including demonstrating the ways in which urban ecosystem services must be carefully tailored to the bioregion of the city. Strongly placed to investigate the impacts of choices made by infrastructure agencies in Los Angeles, the team led by Dr. Stephanie Pincetl has been able to show that there are a number of real costs associated with the placement of city vegetation.
