La Kretz Center Postdoc Alexandria Pivovaroff studies climate change and its interaction with drought. The goal of her project is to understand the effect of "hotter drought" on woody plant species and relate this to fire risk in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Brad Shaffer Receives Teaching Award

La Kretz Center Director Brad Shaffer is the 2015 recipient of the Meritorious Teaching Award in Herpetology, which "recognizes superior teaching effectiveness and mentoring of students in the area of herpetology, and provides student members of the North American herpetological societies the opportunity to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to herpetological education, in either the classroom or mentoring student research endeavors.”

Experimenting in the great outdoors

A $500,000 gift from Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky will add a laboratory to the La Kretz Field Station in the Santa Monica Mountains. Supervisor Yaroslavsky, a native Angeleno and Bruin alumnus, has been a leader on environmental matters in L.A. County. Now completing his fifth term as the Third District’s representative, Yaroslavsky has spearheaded land protection efforts in his district.
