The UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Environmental Science Practicum Coordinator.
The Environmental Science Practicum is the innovative, three-quarter capstone experience for all students in our interdisciplinary Environmental Science B.S. Degree program. The entire senior class of ~65-75 students works in teams of 6-7 students on research projects that are defined and conducted in collaboration with public agencies, businesses or non-profit organizations.
Summer Quarter 2014:
The IoES issues a Request for Proposals each spring to our many partners in the community including over 100 businesses, government agencies and NGOs. It is expected that the successful candidate will be involved in the solicitation, review and selection of client projects for the 2014-15 year. During the summer, the Coordinator serves as the liaison to clients and advisors as needed and prepares for the fall course.
Fall Quarter 2014: Environment 180A
All students enroll together in the lecture/lab course taught by the Coordinator and two graduate Teaching Assistants. The course explores the professional practice of environmental problem solving including scientific and statistical analyses, tools, professional norms, and ethical dilemmas associated with mitigation or development of environmental management strategies. Laboratory sessions provide an introduction to data handling, basic statistics, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data exploration and spatial analysis with an emphasis on the application of these tools as they might be needed in completing their Practicum projects. Students also select their team project, meet with their advisor and client, and complete a background literature review.
Winter and Spring Quarters 2015: Environment 180B/C
For two quarters, student teams meet with their advisors and clients, plan and conduct original research, complete analyses, produce reports and make presentations of their findings. The Coordinator directly advises two teams and we draw upon the vast expertise across UCLA to find the appropriate advisor for the remaining 8-9 teams. The Coordinator also supports all students, teams, advisors and clients as needed.
