Abstract

Conservation effort and funding is limited forcing us to use surrogate species as shortcuts to tackling conservation problems. I discuss five conceptual challenges with this approach and then use a study of retaliatory lion killing to highlight how flagship, umbrella and indicator buzzwords should not be conflated.
